I've had pets all of my life. And brothers with somewhat more exotic pets. Cats, dogs, ferrets, iguanas, birds, fish, gerbils, hamsters, etc. I was a built in pet sitter from the start. The difference is that now I’m bonded and insured and I do what I love for a living.
Cats and dogs especially are an ongoing love affair for me. I've fostered both. I've completed my apprenticeship at Forever Friends dog training school in Ottawa and taken a second training program through Ottawa Canine School because I believe you can never stop learning. I’ve learned a LOT about pet behaviour and how to explain it to my clients. I bring that knowledge to all of the pets that I care for.
I'm certified to teach the Walks ’N’ Wags Pet First Aid course and the Off The Grid course. I would like to see many more people aware of how to deal with a pet emergency. Our pets are family members, right? Education is always a good first step.
I am a member in good standing of Pet Sitters International. This gives me access to many more pet sitters with answers to those questions that I don't immediately have the answer to. The more you learn the more you realize just how MUCH there is to learn.
I live just outside of Kemptville with my husband, four dogs, (lab mix, beagle mix, flatcoat retriever, and shepherd mix—rescues all!) and the cats that have adopted us over the years. There are occasionally fosters around as well.
Purrs and Paws has been officially in operation since 2009. If I'm not on the road walking or training dogs, I can usually be found with my pack at my feet and cats in my lap working on making my business better for my clients. I love my job!
After a long and rewarding career as an administrative assistant, Candice retired in August of 2015. However, it was not long before retirement seemed just a bit mind-numbing and she set out to find something that would get her out of the house and in an environment she truly loved.
Lorna Mitchell of Purrs and Paws Pet Sitting had been her pet sitter while she working. Candice liked the caring and professional service Lorna provided, the two became friends and as Purrs and Paws grew and Lorna needed help, it was only a matter of time before Candice accepted an offer of employment. She was thrilled to be able to work with dogs, cats, goats, ducks, horses, fish, reptiles and other creatures. She was even excited to meet all of the pet parents.
Candice has always been an active volunteer with interests in many fields including peer support for people with special needs, community building, and support, human rights activism, animal welfare legislation, and education. She founded and is currently Chairperson of Responsible Dog Owners of Canada. She is also Vice President of North Grenville Dog Parks Inc., and has been involved in building Kemptville’s first dog park.
Candice is enjoying her new career as a pet sitter with Purrs and Paws and cheerfully declares to anyone who will listen, “it is the best job I have ever had.”
Hello, I have had pets most of my life. These include dogs, cats, birds and fish. I love being a Dog Walker-Pet Sitter! There is nothing that makes me happier than to have clients that are happy to see me.
I currently have 3 dogs, Rosie (Lab), Lilly (Westie) and Scout (Scottie) and 1 cat Sampson who is very tolerant of his canine siblings.
I have taken the Walks ‘N” Wags Pet First Aid. I look forward to caring for your fur babies while giving you the peace of mind that they are being loved and pampered while you are away.
